The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has held special activities to mark this year's World Environment Day. Aimed at raising public awareness about environmental protection and waste management, these special activities were conducted last Friday morning in Villingili (Vilimale). The primary objective of these initiatives was to promote sustainable waste disposal habits and to encourage the preservation of the country's natural beauty.
In addition to WAMCO employees, the WAMCO management team and the Vilimale Police also actively participated in these events. As part of World Environment Day, WAMCO spearheaded two major initiatives. WAMCO staff, along with the management team and Vilimale Police, initiated a "Beach Cleanup" to clean the coastlines of Vilimale. During this activity, plastic bottles, various types of litter, and large waste items accumulated on the Vilimale beach were collected and removed, successfully restoring the area to a clean and accessible state for public use.
Furthermore, in alignment with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to plant 5 million trees, WAMCO employees planted 80 different types of trees in honor of Environment Day. The Vilimale team alone managed to plant 220 distinct plants. Additionally, under this same program, the Hulhumalé WAMCO team participated in an event organized by the Hulhumalé Community Alliance (HCA) and successfully planted 50 coconut palms.
These activities highlight that waste management is a shared responsibility that everyone must carry together. Such initiatives also strengthen the bonds among employees and significantly increase environmental awareness. While World Environment Day is celebrated globally on June 5th every year, this current administration is actively undertaking extensive efforts to protect the environment and find permanent solutions to environmental issues. Consequently, WAMCO noted that celebrating such days provides additional encouragement for ongoing environmental protection efforts, and the corporation has decided to continue targeted environmental protection activities across the entire Maldives in the future.
